kandelo — Licensing
=============================
This project uses a split license model, similar to Linux kernel + musl libc:
- The platform (kernel, host runtime, SDK, build scripts, examples) is
licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later
(GPL-2.0-or-later). See COPYING for the full text.
- The runtime library components that are linked into user programs
(libc/musl-overlay/ and libc/glue/) are licensed under the MIT License.
See COPYING.runtime for the full text.
This means you can compile and run your own programs — including proprietary
ones — on this platform without the GPL applying to your code. The runtime
library code that gets linked into your program (the syscall glue and libc
overlay) is MIT-licensed, and the kernel communicates with your program via
IPC, not linking.
If you modify the platform itself (kernel, host, SDK), those modifications
are covered by the GPL.
Component Licenses
------------------
GPL-2.0-or-later:
crates/ Rust kernel and shared types
host/ TypeScript host runtime
sdk/ Cross-compilation toolchain wrappers
scripts/ Build and test scripts
examples/ Example programs and browser demos
MIT:
libc/musl-overlay/ Architecture overlay for musl libc (matches musl's license)
libc/glue/ Syscall glue compiled into user programs
Third-Party Software
--------------------
musl libc — Copyright (c) 2005-2020 Rich Felker, et al.
Licensed under the MIT License. See libc/musl/COPYRIGHT for full details.
The packages/registry/ directory contains source trees of third-party software
(nginx, PHP, MariaDB, Redis, CPython, Git, GNU coreutils, etc.) which retain
their original licenses. See the license files within each subdirectory.
