Debugging in container misses breakpoints in C# version 2.160.4

Type: Bug

Issue Description

In C# Extension version 2.160.4 (and using latest VS Code version - 1.140.0), the debugger running in a containerized app will fail to stop at breakpoints. Checking debugger logging reveals that the request to establish the breakpoints is in an invalid format. Note that reverting to an earlier C# Extension version solves this issue (tested reverting to 2.140.9).

Steps to Reproduce

Install C# Extension version 2.16.4.
Create a blank service app using: dotnet new service -n {serviceName}
Open VS Code and open the folder for the newly created service app.
Set a breakpoint on the line in Worker.cs that performs the logging (should be line 11 by default).
Open command palette using Ctrl + Shift + P
Run the command "Containers: Add Docker Files to Workspace". Choose .NET: Console and add compose files options.
In the terminal run "docker compose -f compose.debug.yaml build"
In the terminal run "docker compose -f compose.debug.yaml up -d"
In the Debug tab in VS Code select the dropdown menu for the debug configurations and select "Add Configuration..."
Add the "Containers .NET Attach (Preview)" configuration
Start a debugging session using the "Containers .NET Attach (Preview)" configuration and select your running container.

The debugger will attach successfully, but the breakpoint will not be hit.

Expected Behavior

The debugger should pause all threads when execution reaches a breakpoint.

Actual Behavior

Breakpoints are ignored.

I am new to bug reporting so sorry if I missed any key information in the report. I should have mentioned that there are other dependencies to follow the "Steps to Reproduce" listed above:

Docker Desktop
Container Tools Extension
C# Dev Kit Extension (probably)

I am almost certain you are running into #9802, which is fixed in main, but there isn't yet a per-release version containing the fix. We are working on updating the remote debugger that is pulled to something that supports newer checksum algorithms, which would also solve your problem, but we haven't quite gotten that release out yet.

I think you could work around it for now by temporarily disabling 'Debug: Require Exact Source' setting under 'Preferences->Settings'

@gregg-miskelly, reading #9802 I agree that it sounds like the same cause. I tested your suggested temporary workaround of disabling the "Require Exact Source" setting and can confirm that doing so does result in the breakpoint being hit. I saw that you mentioned this issue is fixed in the main branch. Is it then safe for me to assume that this fix will be included in the next release version of the C# extension?

Thanks! I will resolve this as a duplicate then, and add the work around to the bug.

This fix will be in the next preview release of the C# extension. I don't fully understand how C# extension release mechanics to know if there will be a non-preview release that doesn't contain the fix before it finally hits GA. Though hopefully we will have an updated remote debugger before then anyway.
